The Burial of the Count of Orgaz
Spanish: The burial of the Lord of Orgaz , better known as The Burial of the Count of Orgaz , is an oil on canvas painted in Mannerist style by El Greco between 1586 and 1588. It was made for the church of Santo Tomé de Toledo , ( Spain ), where it still remains, and is considered one of the best works of its author. The painting represents the miracle in which, according to tradition, San Esteban and San Agustín de Hiponacame down from heaven to personally bury Gonzalo Ruiz de Toledo , lord of the village of Orgazand died in 1323, in the church of Santo Tomé, as a reward for his exemplary life of devotion, humility and works of charity. El Greco accepted the commission to carry out the work in 1586, just over two and a half centuries after the events that it represented.
